Writers: Alfonso Cuaron & Jonas Cuaron
AMAZING. If Cuaron doesn’t win Best Director at the Oscars next year it will be a crime. I know there is still 2 1/2 months of movies to come out but watching this felt like I was watching something revolutionary. The special effects are absolutely the best of the year, the sound design is inventive, Bullock is tremendous. I can’t say enough good things about this. Yes some of the metaphors and images are obvious but it worked for me. One of the smartest things this movie does is that it is relatively simple. It has few characters, it doesn’t leave Bullock or space, but it isn’t just an action movie. I was literally on the edge of my seat throughout the movie. In this modern age of 3 hour CGI blockbusters it seems harder and harder to thrill viewers and this did it by pulling back a little. Sure everything in this is state of the art but it uses the effects to tell a story instead of just throw them in your face.
Absolutely one to see on the biggest screen possible. I didn’t see it in 3D but hopefully I can make it to an IMAX theatre before it is gone.
