Director: Martin Brest
Writer: George Gallo
One of the great mismatched buddy comedies. I was a late comer to this but I have seen it a few times now and I enjoy it more and more each time I see it. Yeah I guess at over two hours it is a bit long but what Martin Brest movie isn’t. The interplay between De Niro and Grodin is classic.
De Niro plays Jack Walsh an ex cop turned bounty hunter. Walsh is an honest by the book guy so when he wouldn’t go on the mob’s payroll he was forced out of the police and became a bounty hunter where he was only responsible for his own actions. He is tasked to pick up accountant Jonathan Mardukas (Grodin) who is also being hunted by the mob boss he stole $15 million from.
The best stuff in the movie is the relationship between Walsh and Mardukas. Yeah it is an action comedy but the conversations between the two have a real intimacy and makes their friendship and third act twists feel really earned and organic. De Niro plays Walsh as a real meat and potatoes kind of guy and Mardukas is smarter and slicker always trying to figured out the angles or how to get out of his situation.
Really funny and smart. The chemistry between the two leads could make or break this one and it really works. Definitely one to watch!
