Miami Blues (1990)

miami bluesDirector: George Armitage

Writer: George Armitage

(Based on the novel by Charles Willeford

A weird nasty little dark comedy I wasn’t really familiar with before watching it.  Alex Baldwin plays a recently release convict who descends on Miami, Florida and almost immediately goes back to doing what got him incarcerated to begin with which is lying to everyone and taking whatever he wants.

Frederick (Baldwin) meets a young and naive prostitute named Susie (Leigh).  She falls for his charming ways and leaves behind her profession in hopes that Frederick and her will have a family and lead a normal life.  Fred Ward play Sgt. Hoke the denture wearing cop who is on Frederick’s trail.

I guess this is meant to be a comedy based on the overall tone of it but there weren’t really any deliberate jokes.  Baldwin plays a pretty despicable character which is fun to watch.  There really wasn’t any discernible message that I could find.  Just weird dirty people doing bad things it seemed.  Definitely had the air of a cult type film, not one for the mainstream, but cool for the right person.
