The Five-Year Engagement (2012)

The Five-Year Engagement

Director: Nicholas Stoller

Writers: Jason Segel & Nicholas Stoller

I was really looking forward to this when it was coming out but I just never really found the motivation to watch it until today.  I have kind of a weird admiration and mixed reaction to it.  I like everyone involved and I like that they tried to show a relationship warts and all.  I get the complaints about length but it seemed clear to me that they were going for something a little more dramatic than a 90 minute comedy.  I like that they weren’t too concerned with making the main characters likable all the time.  I like that they showed a struggle.  Maybe if I didn’t already like everyone involved I wouldn’t be thinking too much about it but I admired that they seemed to be trying for something a little bigger and I’ll take an ambitious failure over something lazy.
