The Master (2012)

Director: Paul Thomas Anderson

Writer: Paul Thomas Anderson

I can say that this was easily my most anticipated movie of 2012.  That coupled with the fact that I was seeing it at an Alamo Drafthouse theatre in Austin, TX projected in 70mm I literally could not be more excited for a movie experience.  I really wish I could say I walked out excited but I just didn’t like this like I had hoped.  There are many great things in this movie but in the end I just don’t think I really totally got what exactly the point of it was.  The acting and cinematography are top notch, technical awards all around, but the story itself just has too much left off that I just didn’t know what I was supposed to be feeling about any of it.  I love the tone and I love what the story COULD have been but there is just too much ambiguity and not enough for me to really grab on to.  This is the first PT Anderson movie I have finished and not been in love with.  I will try it again in 6 months on Blu Ray but upon first viewing I can’t help but feel let down.  Also I was in Austin during the weekend this came out and I have been reading how amazing the Drafthouse theatres are.  Bought my tickets early got a good seat.  About an hour in the picture cut out for about ten minutes then once the fixed it the picture cut out 3 more times for about 5 seconds throughout the remainder of the film.  We got refunds but it was a real bummer to say the lest.

Joaquin Phoenix is amazing in this.
