Rampart (2011)

Director: Oren Moverman

Writers: James Ellroy & Oren Moverman

While I found Woody Harrelson to be as compelling to watch as he always is the movie itself I thought was a bit lackluster. Playing what the marketing calls “the most corrupt cop seen on screen” Harrelson plays an old school LA cop who loves to beat the shit out of people. Maybe I am desensitized to “bad cop” movies but I didn’t find him to be that much worse than what we have seen before. Is this worse than Washington’s role in Training Day? Or seven seasons of The Shield? A lot of it just has a been there done that feel to it. I also thought the relationship stories were dull. The movie ends on a note where we are supposed to think that the stories with his family are the most important part but we barely really got to know anyone beyond cliche archetypes so I found it hard to care. I really liked Moverman and Harrelson’s first film together The Messenger so I look forward to what the do next. This one just didn’t really do it for me.
