What Planet Are You From? (2000)

Director: Mike Nichols

Writers: Garry Shandling & Michael Leeson and Ed Solomon and Peter Tolan

I was going through all the crap that is on Netflix Instant and I came across this.  Mike Nichols directing?  The Graduate Mike Nichols?  The Charlie Wilson’s War Mike Nichols?  That one?  Directing Garry Shandling, John Goodman, Annette Benning, Ben Kingsley, and Greg Kinnear in a comedy about an Alien with a buzzing boner?  And I had never seen this before?  Clearly this is a great undiscovered gem?

Nope!  The reason I hadn’t seen this is because it pretty much blows.  A one joke premise (maybe two), that I already said above, that goes on for almost two hours.  A great director and a great cast wasted on a pretty dopey script also written by some great people!  It is so strange the weird alchemy it takes to make a good movie.

Garry Shandling is an alien from outer space.  They are a race of a-sexual men who have never had to deal with women, needing to impress them, or worried about having sex.  Suddenly they are unable to reproduce an are fitted with fake genitals and are being trained to go to earth in hopes of impregnating women and keeping their species alive.  Cue sex training montage!!  Then there are lots of cliche jokes about teaching these grown men that the best way to talk to a women as to say “uh huh” after everything.  This would probably be funny if it was made decades ago but in the 2000s this is just really dated and not very funny.

I do like Shandling though no matter what really.  He has this awkward charm to him.  After his two groundbreaking television series “It’s Garry Shandling’s Show” and “The Larry Sanders Show” he pretty much cemented his name in the comedy hall of fame so he really doesn’t have to do much after that.

Just a pretty lazy and not very funny movie.  And like 15-20 minutes too long.  Lots of talent wasted and most importantly 2 hours of my life!!
