Shame (2011)

Director: Steve McQueen

Writers: Steve McQueen & Abi Morgan

Fassbender turns in another captivating performance as Brandon, a lonely man who engages in reckless sexual activity to numb his pain and depression.  While I don’t know if I really for sympathetic for someone whose primary issue is “sex addiction” (whatever that is) there is much more nuance and subtlety to this mans issues than just he has sex a lot.

The movie is adult and at times hard to watch but it is unflinching in its portrait of Brandon and his strained relationship with his sister Sissy, played by Carey Mulligan.  It is this type of real and confrontational drama that is so missed in todays Superhero and animated sequel filled multiplexes.

Between this and Fassbender’s other role in another McQueen film, the heart wrenching Hunger, the two have proven to be a great pair and I look forward to anything these two are doing.
