The King of Comedy (1983)

Director: Martin Scorsese

Writer: Paul D. Zimmerman

One of the really great unsung De Niro performances.  People who really follow him know this but I think it gets kind of lost in the shuffle when people talk about him.  Usually it is the tough guy mob stuff that people remember, and this does have this aggressive tone to it, but it is coming from this dorky and slightly off character.  Just a really different role than his standard stuff and Scorsese’s as well.  A movie filled with cringing hilarity in every scene.  Definitely one of the most uncomfortable comedies I can think of.  Terrifically manic performance from Sandra Bernhard as well.
