The Crying Game (1992)

Director: Neil Jordan

Writer: Neil Jordan

First time seeing this.  I knew the legendary twist going in but I didn’t really know anything about it.  Still even knowing the big reveal I was surprised at what a strange little movie this is.  Like pitching this script must have been insanely difficult.  One of those movies that seems so crazy and risky that you can’t believe it even got made.  The movie eventually went on to be nominated for six Academy Awards and win one (for Best Original Screenplay).

Stephen Rea plays Fergus an IRA terrorist who is apart of a team who kidnaps a British soldier named Jody (Forest Whitaker).  The two develop a kind of friendship but when Fergus is ordered to executer Jody he realizes he can’t do it.  Fergus can’t bring himself to execute the plan and when a team of British soldiers move in to take out their IRA headquarters Fergus flees to London living as a day laborer.  He seeks out Jody’s girlfriend Dil and the two begin to see each other.

There are many twists and turns through out the film but also some really good writing and just a very unique and interesting story of love.  I don’t want to get to into it and ruin any surprises but it is on Netflix right now!
