Arthur (2011)

Arthur

Director: Jason Winer

Writer: Peter Baynham

(Story by Steve Gordon)

I remember seeing Brand for the first time in Forgetting Sarah Marshall and thinking he was hilarious and that he was definitely going to break out.  He did and he almost immediately revealed himself to be grating and obnoxious.  He plays the same type the same tone just everything is the same.  This movie is a pretty needless remake.  Being a lovable drunk is no longer a type that applies to this world.  Drinking like this is not seen as cute or fun.  When people watch Mad Men and their constant drinking viewers aren’t thinking it is fun, it is surprising watching people drink all day.  So now we have this PG-13 modern day repurposing of the lovable drunk and it just doesn’t really work, the biggest crime being its lack of jokes.  The script seems to be just the basic outline and they hired Brand to come in and just be charming and make up stuff.  I like Gerwig but she feels very out of place in this.  A bore.
