Monsters (2010)

Director: Gareth Edwards

Writer: Gareth Edwards

If you look this up on imdb you’ll find it has a budget of just $800,000 which I think is the most impressive part. People expecting an action movie will be disappointed but I think this is a case where knowing a little bit about the behind the scenes enhances your appreciation of it. This is an El Mariachi for modern day science fiction.

Six years ago aliens came to earth and were quarantined in the infected zone, which is on the border of Mexico and the United States. The story is simple, a photo journalist is escorting the bosses daughter to safety, out of Mexico and back to the US. The film just follows them on their journey. The special effects are light but used well, and the two lead actors are good enough. I can’t say it is a great movie but it is an impressive one and definitely shows the talent of it’s first time writer/director Gareth Edwards. If this is what he does with under a million I am really excited to see what he does with a bigger budget. It is on Netflix Instant RIGHT NOW! Check it out.
