Director: Sofia Coppola
Writer: Sofia Coppola
I have been meaning to re watch this movie lately and I remember liking it more than most when I saw it in 2006 when it originally came out. Not a flawless crowd pleaser but one I enjoyed more in style and tone than in terms of the acting and story on display I guess. The beauty of the photography, sets, and costumes of this film can’t be denied and the soundtrack is really fun as well and despite being songs that came out 300 years later they fit the mood.
Coppola’s recurring themes seem to be about celebrity and my 2nd watching of this made me think this movie is about here starring in The Godfather 3. France was on top of the world, much like the legendary Godfather franchise. Then a young inexperienced girl comes in to ruin the whole thing, much like Coppola starring in Godfather 3 which resulted in people figuratively calling for her head. Three out of her four movies have been about being a celebrity so it was just an idea that came to my head. I doubt it is something she actively thought about when working on the film.
Overall a great movie to look at. I don’t know if it is particularly revealing or anything, and Dunst is the definition of mediocre, but in terms of style the movie excels and makes it worth watching. Not for everyone but I am a fan.
Also noticed that Tom Hardy of Inception and the upcoming The Dark Knight Rises makes a brief cameo.
