Hannah and Her Sisters (1986)

Hannah and Her Sisters

Director: Woody Allen

Writer: Woody Allen

One of Woody Allen’s best that I have seen.  I admire that he is still writing and directing a movie a year but nothing he’s doing now holds a candle to this stuff he used to do.

Woody Allen is just such a great writer when it comes to just writing people.  Watching the current run of faux indie Fox Searchlight films where people aren’t people they are ideas just makes me appreciate this even more.  These characters feel real and nuanced, like real people, and not the cardboard cut out female characters that inhabit nerd fantasy movies like Garden State and 500 Days of Summer, where the women aren’t people just a collection of quirky interests the male screenwriters wish women had.

I love the Woody Allen New York I see in his older movies.  I have been to New York many times but when I watch his movies from the 70s and 80s it makes me realize I have never been there.
